EAP / EFAP – What's It's All About?

Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) is a specialized benefit in place to benefit both the employer and the employee. The essence of an EAP is that healthy employees are fully productive employees at work and in their personal and familial lives. Employee & Family Assistance Programs (EFAP) extends this benefit to the dependent family members of the employee. Given that organizations are made up of human capital, this specialized benefit is essential in maintaining healthy, productive and profitable organizations.

The Onset of a Career Transition

Graduate school, your practicum experience, your competency exams, your volunteer work and your current employment have contributed to the professional that you are today.

Reality is a sizeable investment in time, energy and money has been made by you (maybe also by your partner and /or family). Take a moment to reflect on this.

The Elastic Band, A Metaphor For Stress

Dr. Hans Selye who coined the word ‘stress’ in the early 20th century explained that excessive stress occurs when the demands made on an organism exceed that organism’s reasonable capacities to fulfill them.  The stress response can be set off  by physical damage, either by infection or injury.  And, it can also be triggered by emotional trauma or by the threat of such trauma.  With many of my clients today I see that their emotional trauma can include persistent anxiety, a chronic sense of feeling overwhelmed and/or a constant or quick to anger state.  Even too much good stress can tax the organism.
“Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare”. This Japanese proverb implies that it is vitally important to have both and to get the order right. I have coached hundreds of people – many in the mental health profession - launch or shift directions in their careers. Initially, many felt stymied when I instructed them to work out a vision of their successful career. They could speak in generalities but not in substantive detail. It is the detail that is necessary.

The Skinny on Stress Leave

Stress-leave is a catch-all term for a medical leave due to a mental health issue such as depression, anxiety, anger. Such a medical leave requires a note from the employee’s physician stating that the employee is not mentally fit to be working at this time. This is a legitimate disability.

As a specialist in human behaviour in the workplace, I consult with many organizations around employee issues. In my private practice, I see many employees at various stages of stressful situations. My goal is to help them deal with their issues so that they can get back to work and to life fully functioning.
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are often sought after by clinical counsellors wanting employment or wanting EAP referrals to fill their private practice. It appears that many counsellors wanting to break into the field of EAP do not fully understand what this specialized benefit is all about. The field of EAP is exciting, challenging, competitive and ever-evolving in this 21st Century.
